Nature of Aragon > Geology

Internal geological phenomena are mainly builders of inequalities that did not exist in the pre-existing topography, such as happens when a mountain range is formed.

External geological phenomena such as erosion, the transport of eroded materials and their sedimentation tend, however, in general, to destroy the elevations or inequalities created. The interaction between the two causes the reliefs, that is, the shapes of the surface.

There are three fundamental causes that intervene in the formation of the relief:

Lithological geomorphology.

Valleys are often formed where the most easily erodible rocks exist and the mountains or relatively higher areas coincide with the most resistant rocks. However, other times the river network crosses soft and hard rocks interchangeably, although, even in these cases, the different lithologies are noticeable on the slopes of the valley slopes.

The differences in resistance between different rocks are therefore usually reflected in the relief, this process being called "differential erosion".

We can also distinguish lithologies by the density of the hydrographic network that is formed on them. In some, a multitude of small valleys are formed and we say that their drainage is very dense. In other cases the interfluves (areas between channels) are very extensive, which means that drainage is not very dense.

If we look at the Aragonese mountains and their reliefs, the resistance to erosion could be classified as: high, medium and low.

  1. Granite. It is always found in elevated areas of the Axial Pyrenees not only because of its high resistance to erosion but also because they are high areas between faults.

Dinosaurs in Aragon.

Also Aragon enjoys a diverse and varied Nature where passing by plants, animals, Geology, or landscapes we can arrive at a fantastic bestiary that lives in its monuments.

The information will not be complete without a stroll by its three provinces, with shutdown in some of its spectacular landscapes like Ordesa, the Moncayo, Monegros or by opposition the Ebro.

Also you can dedicarte to the intangible ones: from the legend compilation that also does to universal Aragon.

The pasapues project is an extension of the Aragón project is like that, and tries to collect and relate all possible types of documentary information about Aragon: texts, books, articles, maps, illustrations, photographs, narrations, etc., and proceed to its publication and diffusion.
