Los dinosaurios era reptiles que vivieron en tierra, pero no podían volar.
Tenian patas rectas, situadas bajo el cuerpo.
Habitaron durante el Mesozoico, era que abarca los periodos Triásico (230-200 millones de años), Jurásico (200-135 m.a) y Cretácico (135-65 m.a.).
Están emparentados por un lado con lagartos, serpientes y cocodrilos, por el otro lado con las aves actuales.
Los había de todo tipo:
- bípedos y cuadrupedos.
- carnívoros y herbívoros
- tan grandes como un camión y tan pequeños como una gallina
- muy listos (como algunos pequeños dinosaurios carnívoros) y con poco cerebro
- ...
Compartieron espacio y tiempo con otras especies como ictiosaurios y plesiosaurios (reptiles marinos) o con los pterosaurios (reptiles voladores) que no son dinosaurios, todos estos grupos se extinguieron al final del cretácico.
A partir de los años 70 se admitió que los dinosaurios formaban un solo grupo y no dos grandes grupos de reptiles terrestres como había dudas hasta entonces.
