Nature of Aragon > Geology

GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION:

The town of Sástago is located next to the Ebro River, in the Bajo Aragón region. It is easily accessed from Zaragoza, traveling about 60 km towards the Southeast along the N-232 and regional highway 221; What we are doing is following the course of the Ebro, marked by its fertile plains, downstream.

CONTENT:

Typical meander shapes in the Ebro River, well observable from towns such as Sástago, Alborge or Cinco Olivas. The rambling course, with erosive and depositional fronts, corresponds to a phase of maturity of the river, with a relatively slow flow of the waters, now partly conditioned by the Mequinenza reservoir. The channel, with a development of terraces less than upstream (remember the wide plain of Zaragoza), is responsible for the tertiary materials of the geological depression of the Ebro; These lie subhorizontal and are made up here of detrital-carbonate formations (clays, sandstones, marls and margolimestone), between which levels of gypsum are interspersed. A massive, compact form of gypsum known as alabaster is mined; Quarry exploitation is already observable from Fuentes de Ebro, with very striking waste dumps with great environmental impact; raw material (there is a trade-exhibition center for handmade alabaster pieces in Cinco Olivas).

From Sástago, if we take local highway 2,105 towards Bujaraloz to the north, it is possible to see a typical steppe area of the Ebro depression, with its seasonal brackish lagoons and halophilic vegetation (saline soils).

Also Aragon enjoys a diverse and varied Nature where passing by plants, animals, Geology, or landscapes we can arrive at a fantastic bestiary that lives in its monuments.

The information will not be complete without a stroll by its three provinces, with shutdown in some of its spectacular landscapes like Ordesa, the Moncayo, Monegros or by opposition the Ebro.

Also you can dedicarte to the intangible ones: from the legend compilation that also does to universal Aragon.
