Insects with membranous and leathery wings, with an elongated thorax and long and robust front legs, perfectly adapted to capture prey.
They have incomplete metamorphosis. There are numerous species in hot countries.
They are voracious predators and forage for food by lurking motionless, except for the head that moves in all directions.
To catch their prey they shoot their front legs and quickly bend them around their victim.
After mating, the male mantis is eaten by the female.
Typical species is the Praying Mantis or Santa Teresa.
