The male is a large rooster of grayish-black plumage in its upper parts with brown wing coverts, greenish-brown breast, tail and belly spotted with white and red caruncle around the eye.
The female, much smaller, is brown, variegated, with fanned tail and dark terminal strip. The young are similar to the female.
They inhabit tranquil forests, with clearings where bushes grow that provide them with abundant berries Nest in general at the foot of a tree, excavated in the ground.
In April-May, they put 5 to 8 very cryptic eggs, stained with brown tones that the female only incubates for 26-29 days.
The chickens, nidífugos, are attended only by the urogallina and at 15-20 days they begin to give short flights.
In winter they feed on buds and buds of conifers, but in summer their food is more varied including grass and fruits of various species and larvae of insects.
The chickens in their first ages eat basically insects (especially ant larvae).
