Flat or pleuronectiform fish are fish that have laterally compressed body and asymmetrical, being adapted to inhabit the seabed.
They live lying on a flank of their body, which is devoid of pigmentation.
The larvae of these fish have a symmetrical body and swim normally.
In the course of its development, one of the eyes begins to move to the opposite side, being able to do it with a displacement or piercing the head until it appears on the opposite side.
This is accompanied by a twisting of the anterior region of the body that is asymmetrical.
From that moment the young fish swim on a flank.
They lack a swim bladder and their gill apparatus only evacuates water through the "upper" cleft.
There are many species of flatfish and can be oriented to the right or left.
The anal and dorsal fins cover almost the entire perimeter and some have no caudal fin.
The skin of the "active" side is full of chromatophores which allows them to change color and adapt perfectly to the background.
