Las monocotiledóneas son plantas angiospermas que poseen una sola hoja embrionaria o cotiledón en sus semillas.
La raíz es del tipo fasciculado y de corta duración.
El tallo no suele ser ramificado, no tiene cambium vascular de crecimiento en grosor, pero algunas especies cerecen en espesor por otros medios.
En las plantas herbáceas, el tallo es hueco.
Las hojas suelen ser envainadoras de tallo y paralelinervias, o sea, con nervaduras paralelas.
La flor de las monocotiledóneas suelen ser casi siempre con tres elementos florales o múltiplo de tres.
En algunas especies están muy modificados.
Existen más de 50.000 especies de monocotiledóneas.
