Son plantas herbáceas que se desarrollan tanto sobre la tierra como sobre otras plantas y árboles, y también parásitas de ellas.
La mayoría son de las regiones tropicales o templado-cálidas.
Son muy difíciles de cultivar ya que hay que reproducir sus ambientes naturales.
Las semillas de las orquídeas son tan pequeñas que parecen polvo, y tan sólo pueden germinar estando asociadas con hongos especiales que les proveen de alimento.
Dichos hongos seguirán viviendo en la raíz de la orquídea.
Son famosas estas plantas por sus flores de extraordinarias formas, colores y belleza.
