In the province of Teruel, the vegetation is in a regressive phase, as a result of the action of man. In fact, 30% of the provincial surface is identified with cultivated land for cultivation, while of the rest, almost 60% is covered by a pasture-scrub, resulting, in good part, from the degradation of the original formations. In short, only 26% of the province corresponds to forested surface with forest species, among which the conifers predominate, in an important proportion of repopulation or propitiated by the destruction of old masses of hardwoods. They are located on deep soils with little leachate, constituting a important potential wealth for the municipalities of the high mountain ranges.

In Teruel, within a climatic domain of continental middle Mediterranean mountain, the following formations are represented Stepped vegetables:

• The steppe, more or less open, formed by thyme, aliagas, ontin, esparto, capitanas, sisallo, etc., typical of the climatic conditions semi-arid and skeletal soils, sometimes alkaline and saline, of the Depression of the Ebro.
• The garrigue of kermes oak or mastic, with scattered Aleppo pines, below 400-500 meters.
• Carrascal shrub, with undergrowth of bearberry, Kermes oak or juniper, which extends through the depressions and ascends into the foothills serranas up to 1,200-1,300 meters, quite degraded and often converted into a garrigue or steppe of thyme, rosemary and lavender.
• The quejigar, which is only preserved locally, since it has been replaced by surrounding pine pine forests with rockrose on sandstones and laricio on limestones, until 1.300-1.500 meters, and even by an open scrub of junipers and erizón on the limy leanings of erosion surfaces.
• The sabinar, in the calcareous moors of extreme continentality, at the same altitude.
• The bush, on siliceous materials of the Sierra de Albarracín, which rises to 1,600 meters, replaced by pines albares.
• Over 1,500-1,600 meters dominate the wild pine or albares, with boxwood or creeping juniper over limestones or understory of marojal on quartzites and slates. Especially famous for their beauty and productivity are the pine forests of the Ports of Orihuela, in the Sierra de Albarracín.
• As a remarkable fact, it is possible to point out the presence of black pine in the summits of Gúdar, at around 1,900-2,000 meters, well adapted to the strong wintering and cold winters, which is considered a kind of relic of colder stages of the Quaternary.
• Finally, accompanying the rivers, there are the typical riparian formations, formed by poplars, poplars, elms, ash and willows, more or less extension depending on the importance of the valleys.
  The choperas of the Alto Jiloca stand out for their striking and economic value.
