Las flores suelen ser regulares, con tres pétalos.
El ovario contiene muchos óvulos y el fruto es un folículo o una pequeña baya, o bien fruto seco e indehiscente.
A este orden pertenecen el llantén de agua, la valisneria, la sagitaria, la elodea, todas de aguas dulces, y la posidonia y el potamogedón, estas últimas, marinas.
En la valisneria las flores masculinas se desprenden del pedúnculo y flotan en el agua como barquitos que van a polinizar a las flores femeninas unidas por pedúnculos espirales.
