Gramíneas

Son plantas generalmente herbáceas, difundidas por todo el mundo.

Sus tallos son cilíndricos, nudosos, generalmente huecos, con entrenudos y hojas paralelinervias envainadoras del tallo.
Sus flores están reunidas en espiguillas protegidas por glumas.
Las espiguillas se reúnen en espigas, panochas o racimos.

El fruto es en cariópside y la semilla con mucho albumen harinoso.
En este grupo de plantas se reúnen la mayor parte de los cereales, plantas forrajeras y otras plantas útiles.
Los cereales se consideran como alimento básico de la humanidad (trigo, cebada, avena, mijo, centeno, arroz, maíz) y las plantas forrajeras, que crecen libremente, son esenciales para la alimentación del ganado.
En cuanto a la caña de bambú y a la caña de azúcar, el esparto, el sorgo, son de gran valor para el hombre.
