Nature of Aragon > Fauna

The snail belongs to the class of gasteropods, which are mollusks with an asymmetrical body, and, almost always, bearers of a dorsal shell with a spiral twist that curls on itself 180º to the right where the visceral mass.

Snails have a radula mouth, which is a scraping organ with chitinous teeth that they use to scrape vegetables and even rocks.

The foot is well developed and the skin is rich in glands that secrete mucus that, in land snails, facilitates movement.
Both the head and the foot can be introduced into the shell under unfavorable conditions.

Reproduction

Terrestrial gastropods are hermaphroditic, but when two of them mate, they both fertilize each other with their sperm.

Then they dig a rather deep hole in moist soil and lay the eggs, covering it later.

Displacement

The snails have the foot consisting of very robust and elastic muscles.
The snail seems to slide over the secreted mucus and can even climb the edge of a razor blade without any damage.
In the winter season the snails remain hidden and are enclosed in their shell covering the opening with a layer of mucus that hardens forming a lid.
