It is not easy to give a specific name to the various representatives of the Amanita vaginata that comprise a group of very slender mushrooms, of various colors and sizes. However, the common characteristic that is always present are the pronounced striations on the margin of the cap that are already noticeable in the very young mushroom, and the shape of the cap, accompanied when it is closed and with a central prominence when it extends when open. . Not all Amanitopsis are provided with a ring.
Amanitopsis umbrinolutea can appear with a cap color that varies between brown, yellowish brown and sometimes also greenish-yellow, sometimes fading towards the margin in a light, almost white tone.
The margin also has very marked striae that penetrate radially into the surface over a wide area. The lamellae are white, wide, very tight and free on the foot.
The stem is whitish, but it can also have, like the cap, a brown mottled. It is very slender, without widening at the base, but surrounded by a showy free volva that covers it at the top and with overlapping grayish-white edges.
The meat is white with no particular smells or flavors.
In this photo the detail of the open hat is evident with the typical brown color and the marked presence of long, well-defined striae on the light margin. It is also noticeable how the stem may be darker than that of the specimens in the photo opposite.
This variety of Amanitopsis vaginata is characteristic of coniferous forests, but it can also grow in many other habitats, especially in the mountains. Its growing season runs from summer to autumn. Common throughout Spain.
All Amanitopsis vaginata can be considered an edible mushroom with a delicate flavor. However, it is necessary to clarify. Amanitopsis vaginata should be eaten cooked, otherwise they can be poisonous. There have been cases of poisoning in people who have eaten this Amanitopsis vaginata prepared on the grill and therefore only partially cooked.
It is a slender-looking mushroom with a very long stem and a slightly fleshy cap, but whose diameter is sometimes very large: 6-15 cm.
Attention: check the shape and grooves on the edge of the hat.
