It is a beautiful white mushroom, in which, while the cap and stem maintain that color, the volva quickly becomes stained ocher. The characteristic that allows its differentiation from the deadly white Amanitas is the presence of the frayed membrane on the margin of the cap that is otherwise smooth, rarely covered with any plate. It develops from a round egg at the top that tapers towards the base. The cap in the adult mushroom also tends to maintain a regular and rounded shape with the rest of the veil extending beyond the smooth margin. The lamellae are wide, belly-shaped, whitish to light yellow in color, very tight and rounded near the foot. The stem is cylindrical in section, soft, covered with numerous rather creamy grains or fringes that dry giving the surface a powdery appearance. It has a broken and irregular ring that widens inconspicuously downwards. It is largely covered by a continuous, striking volva, which exceeds the protuberance and appears broken with open edges. The flesh is white and the mushroom gives off a somewhat rancid smell like dust, which changes when it begins to decompose.
This is a species that prefers Mediterranean Europe as its growing area, where it is abundant and well known, becoming scarce towards the north. It grows from July to November in oak and chestnut forests, although it also grows under white fir, preferably in calcareous soil.
According to Prof. Kreisel, this mushroom was reproduced in alabaster in the time of the Pharaohs and was considered a symbol of happiness. It is found in the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean coast.
It is a good edible mushroom that can be prepared without problems in the areas where it is grown where it is known for a long tradition. However, it does not have the organoleptic characteristic of the Amanita caesarea. But those who do not know it well are advised to pay maximum attention due to the danger of confusing it with the deadly white Amanitas that have a similar appearance.
It is short and thick like the Amanita caesarea which it resembles; and it is also egg-shaped when closed. Developed, the diameter of the hat can reach 25 cm. and the foot 15 cm. high.
The Amanita phalloides with a white hat, illustrated in the photo. This, however, does not have a scallop on the margin of the cap and in the egg stage it is narrower above and wider below.
Attention: it has a membrane on the margin of the cap and a showy back.
