It is one of the most beautiful mushrooms that can be collected, either for the showy orange-yellow colors, or for the exemplary shape of the carpopharos, as it has all the attributes of the Amanita taken to their maximum degree. It was already known by the ancient Romans, who considered it a delicacy and gave it the name "boleto", a term that still remains in some dialect name. The cap is very fleshy and initially having a hemispherical shape, it can later become flattened; It shines with a color that goes from bright red to golden yellow. It is smooth, weakly grooved on the edge, with rather short grooves. The lamellae, light yellow at first, later turn golden-yellow; They are very tight, wide on the surface, thick and rounded towards the foot. They have membranous and denticulated edges. The foot, which has a showy fallen ring, has the same color as the lamellae, is wide but not very bulbous at the base, surrounded by a thick, separate white volva, with broken edges that protrude and remain firm for a long time. The flesh is yellow and has no particular odors unless some alteration occurs in it that begins below, in the volva, and then gives off a smell of rotten eggs.
Attention: it has yellow lamellae and stem and a continuous back.
It is a mushroom considered very rare in northern countries, from a certain latitude, and that can occur in Mediterranean areas more abundantly than other species, due to its preference for isothermal climates. It can grow from the end of August to December in sunny forests of oaks, beeches, chestnuts but also pines and firs, in the middle of bushes, grass and in forests. It is found in the Pyrenees, Central Plateau, Levante, Andalusia and Extremadura.
It is an edible mushroom par excellence that can be prepared in all the ways established by mycological cuisine. Raw it can be cut into slices and presented in salads together with other vegetables. In any case, frying it is how you best appreciate its flavor.
It is a mushroom that can acquire large dimensions and has a fleshy appearance that other mushrooms with lamellae do not have. The hat can reach a diameter of 16-18 cm.
The figure shows how the color can have a very intense tone, and also that the Amanita caesarea grows in both planifolia and coniferous forests, where the specimens that reproduce here have been photographed.
