Generally this Amanita appears with its foot very deeply rooted in the ground, elongated with the remains of the main veil that intersect over its entire length up to the height of the ring; the volva is, therefore, not well defined. However, in compact terrain, it is possible to find this species with a more regular shape and with a widened foot and a more locally separated volva.
The cap goes from round to convex, it is grayish brown, without striations on the margin and an almost viscous surface decorated by abundant remains of veil that form warts. Sometimes it lacks them. The warts, which are easy to remove, are not white, as they are generally lighter than the surface of the cap.
The lamellae are white and wide, tapering towards the foot where they become rounded.
The stem is usually white, sometimes it may have grayish-brown decorations. It is quite robust, provided with a grooved ring that is not always well defined and has remains of volva over its entire length in the form of collars with many breaks. At the base it fades to the roots.
The flesh is white and unchanging, somewhat fragile and with little smell.
It is a fairly common mushroom that grows in the summer until September in both coniferous and broadleaf forests with a certain predilection for beech trees. It prefers mountain forests such as those of the Pyrenees.
It can acquire quite large dimensions. The height of its foot is very variable due to the possibility of forming elongated when it is buried deeply or widened if it is more superficially buried. When it is picked there are always fragments of the mushroom on the ground.
It is a mushroom that we are certain can be eaten. However, there are those who doubt this. We do not advise preparing it for those who are not absolutely sure of their identification. It closely resembles the poisonous mushroom Amanita pantherina. Perhaps morphologically it is more similar to the Amanita rubescens but it differs in the flesh that does not acquire the reddish color.
Here are illustrated some regrouped specimens firmly rooted in the ground and one specimen with a very elongated foot and with fragments of the volva that are very clearly evident.
Attention: it has a grooved ring and flesh that does not vary.
