GUIDE FOR DETERMINATION

If it were not for the yellow color of the cap, this mushroom could be confused with the Amanita pantherina, which has identical morphological characteristics, such as the striated cap, the foot with a small bulb with well-defined edges and the presence of annular remains suitable for form the collared volva. The size of the mushroom is also similar. In fact, it does not appear very solid but rather fragile. The cap is round in the small mushroom, then it opens and once developed it becomes very flattened.
It is yellow, not lemon yellow like the Amanita citrina, but more intense.
It always has traces of veil in the form of white scales and has a striated margin.
The lamellae are white and tight, rounded at the base, slightly frayed at the edges.
The foot, white, slender and weak, has a ring that fades and widens at the base into a small bulb, surrounded by the remains of the volva and decorated, above it, with one or more irregular rings.
The flesh is white, a little yellow under the cuticle of the cap; It does not give off any particular odors nor does it have a great flavor.

Rating: EDIBLE

Attention: yellow-orange cap and striations on the margin.

WHERE AND WHEN IT CAN BE FOUND

It is an early growing mushroom that can be found as early as the first days of May and occurs especially in pine forests until late autumn, although it also grows under the leaflets. Prefers sandy soils. Common throughout Spain.

EDIBLE CHARACTERISTICS

This is a highly debated mushroom regarding whether or not it is edible. Some authors talk about its probable poisonousness, others consider it harmless and consider it very good to eat. It seems to be due to its notable variability in shape and color since the more it resembles the Amanita pantherina, the more it is enriched with toxic substances. To eat, only specimens of a beautiful yellow color should be collected and those with an uncertain shade should be discarded.

DIMENSIONS

In general it is not large in size. Its hat can vary between 3-10 centimeters in diameter and the foot, in proportion, is a little longer.

VARIANTS OF THE SPECIES

CAN BE CONFUSED WITH:

The Amanita pantherina of which we observe in the reproduction, the different color of the cap, brown, but with similar characteristics regarding the striae and the position of the ring.
