Las flores de estas plantas son irregulares, con cinco pétalos, uno de los cuales tiene un espolón dorsal.

Entre las más conocidas se encuentran las violetas, que pueden ser flores de aroma delicado, de diversas tonalidades, predominando el violáceo.

El pensamiento o trinitaria, que tiene formas cultivadas muy variadas en estructura y colorido.

Crecen generalmente en praderas y se cultiva con fines ornamentales.
