El orden ranunculales abarca más de 3.000 especies, de las cuales la mayoria son nativas de la zona templada septentrional. Las flores de formas variadas y vistosos colores tienen sobre el receptáculo muchos estambre y varios ovarios que se pueden desarrollar en folículos o frutos indehiscentes.
Los arbustos ornamentales, llamados comunmente, peonias de 50 a 75 cm., poseen gran riqueza de formas y son venenosas, como muchos de sus parientes.
Las vistosas flores tienen grandes pétalos desde blancos hasta rojos y numerosos estambres transformados frecuentemente en pétalos en las variedades cultivadas.
Sus frutos son de paredes gruesas.
Las peonias están distribuidas en toda la zona templada de Eurasia, pero son especialmente frecuentes en China.
Algunas especies como la peonia arbustiva (P. suffruticosa), originaria del norte de China, se siembran desde hace mucho tiempo debido a sus hermosas flores rosadas o blancas, que aparecen en mayo y junio. Necesitan tierra bien abonada y los transplantes frecuentes no les favorecen.
Son plantas herbáceas de las regiones templadas, en zonas de bosques.
Algunas especies tienen los sépalos convertidos pétalos y éstos no existen.
Generalmente poseen cinco pétalos y muchos estambres y carpelos.
