Berberidaceae

Barberry (Berberis vulgaris)

Shrub with yellow flowers, red fruits and typical thorns, considered as transformed leaves.

Some preserves are prepared with red, acidic fruits, especially those of some species.

Yellow wood was formerly used to dye leather.

Barberry is the host of the spring form (ecidians) of cereal rust, a parasitic fungus. From this form, the infection of cereals occurs, at the beginning of summer. For this reason, this plant is not tolerated in growing regions.
