They are generally tropical plants that are sometimes shrubs with small white flowers and berry-shaped fruits.

There are climbing species that adhere to trees and other surfaces using special aerial roots.

It is a familiar plant that we can find covering the walls of many houses, as well as rocks or trees.

It has short and strong roots, located on one side of the stem, which allow it to attach to its supports, they can also cover the floor of a forest.

The flower is yellowish green, with 5 petals 3-4 mm long and pointed. The calyx has 5 tiny teeth. It has 5 stamens and the style is surrounded by a nectar-secreting disc.

The flowers are arranged in rounded clusters that are located in the upper parts of the plant exposed to the sun.

They bloom in September-November and their nectar-rich flowers attract insects, especially wasps.

The leaf is shiny and petiolate. There are two kinds: some with 3-5 lobes, located on the branches that do not flower, and others that are oval or more or less diamond-shaped, located on the branches that will flower.

The fruit is white, 8-10 mm and similar to a berry.

As it is a plant used in gardening, some species have been developed that have more striking colors such as the Marengo variety in the image above.
