Nature of Aragon > Fauna

Fish with partial or fully ossified skeleton.
With scales and swim bladder.

Bone or teleost fish, or teleostomes, are the most numerous. Almost all existing fish belong to this class.

Its main feature is to have the skeleton fully ossified.
The gills are covered by a so-called operculum.
The skin is covered with scales arranged with each other like roof tiles.
They have a swim bladder that is located in the anterior part of the intestine, shaped like a sac and filled with a mixture of gases and air that helps them stay effortlessly at the level they want.
They have no spiral valve.
The tail is homogenous, that is, with two equal halves.
The food is very varied. Some feed on algae or plankton others on insects, worms, molluscs, crustaceans, and many feed on other fish.

Bony fish reproduce by eggs and fertilization is usually external.

Bone fish breathing

The fish opens its mouth by absorbing water with the operculum closed. He then closes his mouth and opens the operculum, forcing water to pass through the gills.

Lateral line

They have a sensory organ called lateral line that indicates the movements of water, pressure, touch, smell, etc. It consists of perforated scales under which a channel of sensitive cells is found.

Eye

The eye of bony fish is round and very simple.

Just look good at short distances. To focus it, the lens can move to the retina through a muscle.
