Nature of Aragon > Fauna

It measures about 20 cm.

It is the largest Aragonese amphibian, and the only one with the cylindrical tail, and its appearance is unmistakable: smooth and shiny skin, and black body with irregular yellow spots on the back, which serve to warn predators of its bad taste (If a fox eats a salamander, he will no longer taste another). The surface occupied by these spots is variable, maximum in the most western Pyrenean valleys.

Common or spotted salamander (Salamandra salamandra).

Like almost all amphibians, their fertilization is external (Male and female embrace in the water and as the female releases the eggs, the male releases sperm that, in the water, fertilizes those eggs), but the salamander He has perfected: as in other urodelos, the male (distinguishable by its more bulky sewer) after a short bridal dance releases a compact sperm pack that the female enters.

The salamander is ovoviviparous: the larvae are born directly from the mother's body, since the eggs hatch inside her (she is one of the few non-oviparous amphibians).

In addition, the female can keep the sperm alive for years, so she can have babies suddenly after a long time separated from males. It lives in the humid forests (it only goes to the waters, shallow, to mate, since nothing bad and it drowns easily), until the 2,000 m. tall.

It is nocturnal and more active after rain.
