In the Monegros Oscenses, between the basins of the Alcanadre and Flumen rivers, there is a wide extension of endorheic water: the Laguna de sariñena. An extremely arid climate with scarce rainfall and an intense summer evaporation, have caused an accumulation of salts both in the water and in the surrounding lands, favoring the presence of a rich halophilous vegetation -like salicornias and bogs- in its vicinity.
The irrigation during the 70s around the lagoon, caused the elevation of the water level and a change in the saline concentration of the waters that modified its natural environment. To solve this, a group of researchers from the CSIC and several naturalists proposed the construction of a drainage channel around the lagoon that would guarantee a similar level of water throughout the year. As a consequence of this, at present a ring of reed surrounds the lagoon and numerous species of bird anity in it, being one of the most important areas for birds in Aragon.
