The exceptional natural values of the northern slope of this massif were recognized as early as 1927 when, by Royal Order, the Moncayo was declared Natural Site of Interest National.

Subsequently, the first Law of Protected Natural Spaces (Law 15/1975, of May 2), obliged the Government to dictate the precise provisions to reclassify the lands that in At that time, they enjoyed the status of Natural Sites of National Interest and complied with the conditions established in said Law, among which was the purpose of facilitate man's contacts with nature. This was the case of DEHESA DEL MONCAYO, which, at the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, was declared a 1978 NATURAL PARK.

The management of this Natural Area was then entrusted to ICONA to be subsequently transferred to the Autonomous Community of Aragon. Since its declaration, the Park has a consultative body, the Governing Board, which participates in the preparation of reports and decision-making. In addition, Moncayo has launched the first Natural Resources Management Plan (PORN), a novel legal planning instrument established by the Law of Conservation of Natural Areas and Flora and Wildlife promulgated in 1989 and on which the management tasks should be based.

The extension of the limits of the DEHESA DEL MONCAYO NATURAL PARK and its reclassification, currently in the process of approval, is one of the pending claims for the best conservation of this peculiar ecological enclave of the Ebro Valley.
