Description

Southwest of Teruel, bordering on Castilian lands, the Sistema Iberico hides in the Sierra de Albarracin one of the most striking landscape and cultural ensembles in Aragon: the Rodeno de Albarracin, where an extensive pine forest sits on curious formations of red sandstones.

This Natural Space, not well known until the 80s, acquired relevance from the diffusion of the important archaeological findings that took place here. In 1982, Marconell announced the first two shelters of Levantine Rock Art in the Iberian Peninsula: El Prado de los Toricos del Nacazo and El Cocinilla del Obispo. Since then, the Rodeno de Albarracín attracts numerous researchers who are becoming interested not only in the archaeological aspects but also in the natural and human environment of the area.

In 1986 the creation of the Cultural Park of Albarracín is proposed, a project that will not prosper since there is no such legally defined figure in Aragon. However, with afterwards, the Rodeno de Albarracin Rock Art Set is declared Asset of Cultural Interest, proceeding to the signaling of the shelters and the construction of an Information Center and Visitor attention.

It is at the beginning of the 90 when, after carrying out a previous study of the area by the Government Aragones, some municipalities around the Rodeno request protection of this enclave for its high scenic and cultural interest. Thus, in the spring of 1995, at the request of the Community of Albarracín and following a report from the Council for the Protection of Nature, the PROTECTED LANDSCAPE OF LOS PINARES DE RODENO is declared by Decree.

This legal regime of protection is established, not so much in terms of the value of the natural elements or the uniqueness of the ecosystems -as is the case of the Parks-, but with the intention of recognizing and protecting the set of natural and cultural values that make a natural environment relevant in its entirety.

Regulating the uses and activities carried out in the area and making the conservation of the natural environment compatible with the traditional use of forests, livestock and agriculture, are the main objectives pursued by the protection of PINARES DE RODENO, which It becomes the first Protected Natural Area of Teruel.
