Las plantas insectívoras o carnívoras comprenden a varias familias de plantas herbáceas y arbustivas que tienen la facultad de atrapar insectos y otros pequeños animalillos y "digerirlos", obteniendo de esta forma un suplemento alimenticio nitrogenado que es escaso en el ámbito en que viven. Para ello han desarrollado diversos mecanismos.

La Sarracenia tiene sus hojas en forma de odre, que contiene agua mezclada con enzimas digestivas.

La Dionaea tiene unas hojas dobladas que se cierran bruscamente cuando el insecto roza unos pelos sensitivos.

En los bordes de estas hojas existen unos pelos inclinados hacia adentro que impiden que el insecto escape.

La Drosera posee unas hojas cubiertas de filamentos con gotitas pegajosas donde quedan atrapados los insectos.
