Las Bacilariófitas o Diatomeas son organismos unicelulares, libres o formando colonias.

Adoptan dibujos variadísimos, pero son siempre diminutas y sus dimensiones, están comprendidas ente 2 micrometros y 0,4 mm.

Su membrana celular está constituida fundamentalmente por pectina, fuertemente impregnada de sílice, de modo que resiste la acción de los ácidos y bases fuertes.

A este caparazón silíceo en forma de estuche con dos valvas, se le da el nombre de frústulo.

Cada parte o teca encajan una en la otra como la tapa y el fondo de una caja de cartón.

Cada teca consta de una pieza lateral, la pleura o banda conectiva, que en la zona de yuxtaposición con la correspondiente a la otra teca, forma el cingulo.

Son muy resistentes a la acción de los elementos, incluso a altas temperaturas.
