Son plantas cormofitas, con tejidos y órganos perfectamente diferenciados.

Es el grupo de vegetales más numeroso, con más de 200.000 especies.
Se las conoce también como espermafitas o espermatofitas y se reproducen por semillas con órganos sexuales visibles.

Se dividen en Gimnospermas y Angiospermas.

Gimnospermas

Son plantas que tienen las semillas al descubierto, con flores formadas por hojitas escamosas generalmente en forma de piña.
Son perennes y tienen una gran importancia económica.
Hay unas 700 especies de gimnospermas y abundaron en determinados períodos geológicos, especialmente en el carbonífero.

Angiospermas

Son las plantas fanerógamas más evolucionadas y extendidas de todos los vegetales y las más numerosas en especies (más de 200.000).

Estas plantas tienen flores que producen semillas encerradas y protegidas por la pared del ovario (carpelos) que, posteriormente, se convierte en fruto.

Las angiospermas pueden ser plantas herbáceas, arbustivas o arbóreas.

Representan el bloque más importante del alimento humano y de muchos animales.

Por sus semillas se clasifican en: Dicotiledóneas y Monocotiledóneas.
