Es una gran familia de plantas con unas 3.500 especies, que se caracterizan por sus flores en forma de cruz, con cuatro pétalos y seis estambres.

Suelen ser amarillas, blancas o rosadas, y forman racimos densamente agrupados.

Los frutos son por lo general largos y estrechos.

Tienen una gran importancia económica, pues muchas de sus especies se cultivan en huertas y son comestibles.
