Compuestas
Es una gran familia con más de 2.500 especies entre las que se incluyen muchas de las llamadas malas hierbas, además de otras de cultivo. Entre las más conocidas se pueden nombrar a las margaritas, los girasoles, la lechuga, los cardos, etc.
Se caracterizan por tener unas flores muy pequeñas, agrupadas en cabezuelas muy compactas.
Las florecillas tienen forma de tubo (flósculos) que pueden tener cintas salientes a modo de pétalos (lígulas) y que les dan el aspecto de una sola flor.
Tienen brácteas debajo, a modo de sépalos y los frutos en aquenio suelen tener un penacho de pelos (vilano).
