Pedro Alfonso is the Christian name by which the former Jewish sage Moisés Sefardí is known.
This Huesca convert included in his famous work Discipline clericalis, more than thirty traditional Arabic and Hebrew narratives, thus serving as a bridge between Eastern and European culture through Aragon.
His work being written in Latin reached a great diffusion, to which his travels and stays in England and France also contributed.
The very orientation of Disciplina clericalis, "clericalis" in the sense of directed to those who want to be cultured, not exclusively clergymen. And "Disciplina" in the sense of methodology or procedure to achieve this objective, which in this book consists of a series of narrations or stories, stories we would say now, that by taking an example of morality they teach us the right path.
Among these moralizing narratives are several of animals. The fundamental thing, for our interest, is that each animal appears endowed with virtues or defects that serve to set a moralizing example to the narrative.
These stories to be effective must attract attention and make us pay attention to them, that is why they are entertaining and varied and with the use of the strange or anecdotal as an intentional narrative resource.
