Valoraci�n negativa que tiene su origen en el Libro de los Proverbios, y posteriormente en el Nuevo Testamento, en la Carta 2, 2, 22 de San Pedro: "Volvi�se el perro a comer lo que vomit�, y la marrana lavada a revolcarse en el cieno.".

Eusebio, en su Historia Eclesi�stica, compara al perro con el diablo, bas�ndose a su vez en Cancerbero (T.H. White," The Books of the Beats. A translation from a Latin Bestiary of the twelfth century, London 1955, Vol 1, p�g 109).

En la Edad Media tambi�n simboliza la envidia, encarna a los lisonjeros, a los hip�critas e ingratos.

Su faceta de fidelidad al due�o y el de guardi�n de la casa, tambi�n est� presente en su significado, pero en muchas ocasiones est�n devorando o despedazando a los condenados.
