S�mbolo de lujuria, utilizado como tal por Arist�fanes, aunque tambi�n simboliza la pereza y la gula, el jabal� est� desprestigiado.

En la Edad Media se resalt� este simbolismo negativo.

En varias representaciones acompa�a a San Antonio en el desierto, donde es sometido a m�tiples tentaciones.
Estas simbolizan la victoria de la Fe sobre la Lujuria y otros apetitos de la Carne.

El padre Cahier, en sus "Caracter�sticas de los santos en el arte popular", de 1867, hace referencia al privilegio del que disfrutaban Los Antonitas o cofrades de San Antonio de poder dejar vagar por las calles de las ciudades a las piaras de cerdos con las que alimentaban a los enfermos de sus hospitales.

No siempre es f�cil precisar si los diferentes textos hacen referencia a cerdos o jabal�es, por ejemplo los Viajes de Mandeville, donde se cita simplemente a puercos salvajes multicolores, pero sin acotar claramente si son jabal�es o cerdos.
