Un manto de nieve cubre la cara norte del Moncayo por encima de los 1.200 metros, y en la vertiente sur permanece la nieve en las exposiciones de umbría. A pesar de ello, la vegetación va abandonando el período de latencia invernal y muchas especies presentan ya follaje, como fresnos, chopos, sauces o serbales. El roble albar se ha adelantado a otros "quercus" y la tierna hoja que ha sacado sufre las bajas temperaturas que han llegado tardíamente. Estas circunstancias metereológicas provocan que rebollos y hayas, que se encontraban muy adelantados, frenen su actividad, aun cuando el hinchamiento de sus yemas anuncie la próxima explosión del follaje. Han renovado también sus hojas los pinos, los escobones, espinos, brezos, acebos, etc.
Mientras tanto, los pastizales subalpinos permanecen sepultados bajo la cubierta de nieve, gracias a que la vegetación que sustentan, a base de pratenses vivaces, enebrales rastreros, piornales, etc. está perfectamente adaptada a largos periodos de innivación. En zonas más bajas, han florecido plantas anuales y vivaces como hepáticas, heléboros, orquídeas, etc. además de las flores del brezo, escobones, erizones, sauces...
