Laguna de Gallocanta.
The Laguna de Gallocanta is an endorheic formation of brackish water, located in a wide basin and in the heart of the Iberian System, at an altitude of 990 meters. It is the largest inland lagoon in Europe, composed of three units from north to south. The presence of salt on the beaches and meadows forms wide salt flats and junqueras arranged in borders around the lagoon, colonized by very specific vegetation. In places where the fresh water is flooded appear the reed, the line, the willow or the lily.
The environment of the lagoon hosts different ecosystems related to each other: the wetland, the steppe and the forest. The fauna is represented without doubt and especially by the flocks of cranes, who come at sunset to their roosts. The concentrations of individuals of this species can reach 60,000 migratory passes, although Gallocanta is one of the most important wintering points in Europe, with a regular presence of more than 5,000 birds.
In addition to the cranes, there are important groups of aquatic birds: common coot, European porro, red duck.
There are also surface anatidae: blue nade, common teal, white jar, etc.
Also, a striking list of limes is found in the Laguna de Gallocanta: avefria, common eucalyptus, common avocet, etc. It does not end here the fauna of the lagoon, being possible to observe many other species, both birds and mammals: marsh harriers, bruit, swamp bunt, vulgar hen, quail, wild boar, fox, hare, among them.
To visit the surroundings of the lagoon it is necessary to previously request an authorization to the Directorate. General of the Natural Environment, of the Government of Aragon, sending the following information: Name, Address, telephone number and DNI of the applicant. Dates of the visit.
